Join us in our vision to celebrate excellence in the business of law in Wales and showcase the positive impact of our legal sector on the Welsh economy and society. 

 

All our awards are free to enter and open to any organisation, team or individual (where relevant) in the legal sector in Wales. All nominated organisations, teams and individuals must be based in Wales. Nominations may be submitted on behalf of yourself, your team / organisation or for a colleague, peer or friend.​​

Legal Services Transformation
of the Year

The Legal Services Transformation of the Year award recognises outstanding transformation by a legal services provider to benefit clients and / or its own people. This category is open to law firms, in-house legal teams, and other legal service providers in Wales that have successfully implemented transformative strategies, such as adopting new technologies, streamlining processes, enhancing client service, or improving access to justice. The award highlights initiatives that drive efficiency, innovation, and meaningful impact in the legal sector.

Criteria: Entries should demonstrate how your practice or team has successfully implemented a transformative strategy that benefits clients and / or your own people. The judges will be looking for: - Vision and objectives – A clear explanation of the transformation initiative, its goals, and why it was needed. - Strategy and adoption – The approach taken, including new technologies, process improvements, or service enhancements. - Implementation and execution – How the transformation was delivered, including challenges overcome. - Impact and measurable success – Evidence of tangible benefits, such as improved efficiency, client satisfaction, employee engagement, or increased access to legal services. - Long-term sustainability – How the transformation has been embedded for lasting impact, and what it’s helped to inspire for the future. Supporting evidence may include data or before-and-after comparisons.

Business Growth 
Award of the Year
(For businesses with 1-50 employees)

The Business Growth Award of the Year recognises law firms, legal service providers, or in-house teams that have achieved significant growth. This could include revenue expansion, client base increase, market influence, strategic development or offering measurable added value to organisations. The award celebrates innovation, strong leadership, and effective business strategies that have driven sustainable success in the legal sector or for their organisation.

This award is for organisations with up to 50 employees.

Supporting evidence may include financial metrics and client testimonials.

The Business Growth Award of the Year recognises law firms, legal service providers, or in-house teams that have achieved significant growth. This could include revenue expansion, client base increase, market influence, strategic development or offering measurable added value to organisations. The award celebrates innovation, strong leadership, and effective business strategies that have driven sustainable success in the legal sector or for their organisation.

This award is for organisations with 51+ employees.

It celebrates initiatives that enhance client satisfaction, improve communication and processes, and deliver outstanding results. The award highlights innovation, responsiveness, and a client-centric approach that sets new standards in the legal industry in Wales.

Criteria: Entries should demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellence in client care – within legal services provision, with any collaborative partners / referrers, and through your wider profile and communications. Submissions must show how nominees have demonstrably gone the extra mile for clients while maintaining an ethical and professional practice. The judges will be looking for: - Client-centric strategy – A clear approach to understanding client needs and any vulnerabilities; delivering beyond expectations and embedding a culture of client care excellence across the whole business. - Innovation and service enhancements – Implementation of processes, technologies, communication or other initiatives that help to deliver outstanding client experiences, for all clients. - Communication and engagement – Evidence of improved and transformative client interactions, accessibility, and responsiveness. How you excel at dealing with complaints which may arise. - Impact and measurable success – Demonstrated improvements in client satisfaction, retention, or outcomes. - Sustainability and industry influence – How your practice or team may have set new client care standards / best practice in the legal sector in Wales.

Diversity, Equity
& Inclusion Award
of the Year

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award will recognise a law firm, legal service provider, or in-house team that have made a tangible difference in creating a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. This award intends to highlight best practice for the legal profession in Wales, based on evidence-led submissions of equity-focused initiatives that create a more accessible legal sector, and a strong culture of belonging. The award highlights leadership, innovation, and measurable impact in advancing DEI within the legal sector in Wales.

Wellbeing Strategy of the Year

The Wellbeing Strategy of the Year award recognises law firms, legal service providers, or in-house teams that have implemented outstanding initiatives that are embedded in strategy and culture, to support the mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing of their employees. Our judges will be looking to recognise organisations that take a strategic approach to creating a positive workplace culture. The award highlights leadership and commitment to fostering a supportive and resilient legal workforce, at all levels.

Criteria: Our judges are looking for: - Strategic Approach & Leadership: How wellbeing is embedded in the organisation’s culture and business strategy; leadership commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture. - Initiatives & Innovation: Range and effectiveness of initiatives supporting mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing; innovative or unique approaches to workplace wellbeing. - Impact & Measurable Outcomes: Evidence of improvements in employee wellbeing, engagement, or productivity; metrics demonstrating success. - Inclusivity & Accessibility: How the strategy supports employees at all levels and in different roles; efforts to ensure wellbeing initiatives are accessible, inclusive, and responsive to diverse needs. - Sustainability & Continuous Improvement: Plans for maintaining and evolving the wellbeing strategy over time; commitment to reviewing and improving initiatives based on employee needs and feedback.

Future Lawyer Initiative of the Year

This award recognises a law firm, in-house legal team, or barristers’ chambers in Wales that has developed and implemented an outstanding programme to attract, support, and qualify the next generation of legal professionals. This award celebrates organisations that are not only training future lawyers but shaping the future of the Welsh legal profession. Entries are open to any organisation in Wales that offers structured qualification pathways for aspiring lawyers, including but not limited to: • Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) programmes, Legal apprenticeships, CILEx (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) pathways, Pupillage schemes or other structured qualification or training programmes for future lawyers.

Criteria: Our judges are looking for: - Innovation & Programme Design - How your initiative demonstrates excellence in your organisation / team to support qualification and professional growth. Outline any unique or innovative approaches taken to enhance legal education and training, and include any use of technology, mentorship, or alternative learning methods. - Impact & Effectiveness - Measurable outcomes, including retention, qualification success rates, and career progression; evidence of how the programme has improved access to the profession for diverse candidates. - Wellbeing & Resilience Support - Measures taken to promote mental health and wellbeing for trainees; initiatives supporting work-life balance and professional resilience. - DEI: Efforts to improve access to the legal profession for underrepresented groups; financial support, scholarships, or other assistance provided to increase participation; evidence of a diverse intake and success rates among participants. - Long-Term Professional Development - how the programme prepares individuals for long-term careers in the legal profession; support for post-qualification development, networking, and career progression.

Social Impact Award

The Social Impact Award recognises law firms, in-house legal teams, or barristers' chambers in Wales that have made a meaningful difference in their communities. It will honour initiatives that drive positive social change, improve access to justice, support vulnerable groups, or promote broader societal equity and well-being. The award highlights commitment, innovation, and measurable impact in making a difference beyond legal services. A special effort will be made to contextualise an initiative’s success in relation to size and type of organisation. Please note that there is a separate Pro Bono Award.

Criteria: Entries should demonstrate a meaningful contribution to social change, access to justice, or community well-being. The judges will be looking for: - Purpose and objectives – A clear explanation of the initiative, its goals, and the social issue it addresses for a community / communities in Wales. - Innovative approach – Creative or strategic methods used to drive positive change, beyond financial contributions to programmes / projects. - Engagement and collaboration – How your team / organisation worked with communities, partners, or stakeholders to meet the programme needs and ensure sustainable impact. - Impact and measurable Success – Evidence of tangible benefits, such as improved access to justice, support for vulnerable groups, or long-term social change. - Scalability and sustainability – How the initiative has been embedded for lasting impact, considering your organisation’s / team’s size and resources.

Pro Bono Award

The Pro Bono Award recognises a law firm, legal team, or individual in Wales with a remarkable pro bono portfolio. The winner of this award will evidence significant contribution or commitment to the public good and to access to justice in Wales through the participation of pro bono legal advice and representation, and by positively influencing others to offer pro bono legal advice.

Criteria: The judges will be looking for: - Outstanding commitment and approach to pro bono for communities by an individual, organisation or team based in Wales. - Demonstration of consistent pro bono involvement beyond a single case. - Proactive engagement in seeking out pro bono opportunities in Wales and England. - Innovation and creativity: If relevant, please highlight any innovative methods used to reach a wider community or client base, and / or new approach to support a particular community in Wales. - Evidence of community impact, broader social change or justice. - Sustainability and outreach: Do you / your team / organisation have established systems to support ongoing pro bono work? - Are there efforts to educate and encourage other lawyers to participate in pro bono activities?

Marketing Initiative
of the Year Award

The Marketing Initiative of the Year award recognises impactful and effective marketing campaigns within the legal sector. It will celebrate a law firm, individual, in-house team or barristers' chambers that has that have successfully enhanced brand awareness, client engagement, or business growth through creative and strategic marketing efforts. The award highlights originality, impact, and measurable success in promoting legal services. It may also be awarded to outstanding internal marketing campaigns.

Criteria: Entries should demonstrate how a marketing initiative has successfully enhanced brand awareness, client engagement, or business growth within the legal sector. The judges will be looking for: - Strategic vision – Clear objectives and rationale behind the campaign, aligned with business goals. - Creativity and authenticity – Originality in approach, messaging, and execution. - Implementation and execution – Effective delivery, use of channels, and engagement tactics. - Impact and measurable success – Evidence of results through metrics such as client acquisition, brand recognition, engagement rates, or revenue growth. - Internal campaigns (if applicable) – How the initiative improved internal culture, communication, or employee engagement. - Influence of this success on future marketing initiatives.

Sustainability Award
of the Year

The Sustainability Award of the Year recognises a law firm, in-house team or individual making significant contributions to environmental sustainability. It recognises transformative initiatives, policies, or projects that promote sustainable practices, reduce environmental impact, and drive positive change. The award celebrates leadership in areas such as renewable energy, waste reduction, carbon footprint reduction, sustainable business strategies, and Environmental advocacy and policy influence within the legal sector.

Criteria: Our judges are looking for evidence of: - Innovation & Impact: The originality and effectiveness of sustainability initiatives; measurable environmental benefits, such as reductions in emissions, energy consumption, or waste; demonstrable improvements in sustainable legal practice in Wales. - Commitment to Sustainable Practices: Integration of sustainability into daily operations, decision-making, and long-term strategy; policies promoting responsible resource use, ethical procurement, and carbon-conscious business travel; involvement in wider industry sustainability efforts. - Leadership & Advocacy: How the organisation or team inspired others to adopt sustainable practices; contribution to shaping environmental policies or regulations in the legal sector; participation in sustainability networks, collaborations, or knowledge-sharing initiatives. - Measurable Outcomes: evidence of quantifiable improvements resulting from sustainability initiatives within the context of the initiative / size of organisation. - Long-Term Vision & Continuous Improvement: plans for sustaining and expanding sustainability efforts; commitment to further innovation and continuous progress in environmental responsibility.

Rising Star
Award

The Rising Star Award recognises exceptional emerging talent within Wales’ legal sector who are at an early stage of their career but already demonstrating outstanding promise, impact and professionalism. Judges will assess achievement relative to career stage, quality of contribution, initiative and future potential. This award celebrates individuals who are making a meaningful difference now and show clear potential to become future leaders of the profession.

 

Open to: qualified lawyers - Solicitors, CiLEX, Barristers and Licensed Conveyancers - up to 5 years PQE - working in Wales.

The judges will be looking for: - Early Career Achievement: Evidence of rapid development, responsibility or achievement beyond expectations for career stage. - Quality of Contribution: Consistently high standards of work and clear value added to the team, clients or organisation. - Impact & Recognition: Demonstrable impact through successful projects, outcomes or positive feedback from colleagues, supervisors or clients. - Professionalism & Values: Strong integrity, interpersonal skills and a positive contribution to workplace culture. - Initiative & Drive: Proactive approach to learning, improvement, problem-solving or innovation. - Future Potential: Clear ambition, leadership potential and readiness for greater responsibility within the legal sector. Supporting evidence may include examples of work, testimonials, feedback, career progression, project outcomes or reflections on future aspirations.

Excellence in Legal Operations Award

The Excellence in Legal Operations Award recognises outstanding professionals working in operational, management or strategic roles within Wales’ legal sector whose expertise enables legal services to operate efficiently, ethically and sustainably. Judges will assess operational leadership, strategic contribution and measurable impact across areas such as practice management, finance, HR, IT, compliance, governance, risk, business development or service delivery.

Open to: This award is specifically designed to recognise non-lawyers working in legal practices, chambers or in-house legal teams in Wales, whose work is critical to organisational success. Anyone working in a legal operations, management or specialist support role within the legal sector in Wales may enter.

The judges will be looking for: - Operational Excellence & Impact: Clear evidence of improving how legal services operate, including efficiency, service delivery, compliance, risk management or client experience. - Strategic Contribution: Demonstration of how operational insight has informed or delivered organisational strategy, growth, transformation or long-term resilience. - Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Introduction of new systems, processes, technologies or ways of working that have delivered tangible, demonstrable benefits. - Leadership & Collaboration: Evidence of influence, leadership or effective collaboration with lawyers, senior leaders or wider stakeholders to achieve shared objectives. - Governance, Professionalism & Integrity: High standards of governance, regulatory awareness and ethical practice, supporting confidence and sustainability within the organisation. - Results & Recognition: Measurable outcomes, lasting impact and, where possible, testimonials from colleagues, leadership teams or stakeholders. Supporting evidence may include case studies, performance metrics, testimonials, examples of process improvement, or demonstrations of operational leadership in action.

Legal Entrepreneur Award

The Legal Entrepreneur of the Year Award recognises an individual in Wales’ legal sector who has demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial vision, drive and impact. This award celebrates those who have founded, grown or transformed a legal business, service or model in response to market need, client demand or sector change.

 

Judges will assess entrepreneurial thinking, innovation, calculated risk-taking and the ability to turn ideas into sustainable, high-performing legal services. This award is distinct from the Leadership Award and Excellence in Legal Operations Award and focuses on creation, growth and transformation, rather than management alone. 

 

Open to: Lawyers in the Welsh legal sector who have founded, grown or transformed a legal business or service through entrepreneurial vision, innovation and execution.

The judges will be looking for: - Entrepreneurial Vision & Opportunity: A clear explanation of the opportunity identified, problem solved or gap in the market addressed, and how the individual’s vision shaped the creation or evolution of the business or service. - Innovation & Market Response: Evidence of innovation in business model, service delivery, client offering, use of technology or approach to the legal market, demonstrating responsiveness to change and client need. - Growth, Sustainability & Resilience: Demonstration of sustainable growth, commercial viability and resilience, including scaling, diversification, profitability, client base development or long-term stability. - Risk, Initiative & Execution: Evidence of entrepreneurial risk-taking, personal initiative and the ability to translate ideas into reality through decisive action and delivery. - Impact on Clients, People & the Sector: Clear positive impact on clients, employees or collaborators, and contribution to the wider Welsh legal sector through new services, access to justice, specialist expertise or sector leadership. - Results & Recognition: Measurable outcomes, achievements or milestones, supported where possible by data, testimonials, case studies or external recognition. Supporting evidence may include business growth metrics, case studies, testimonials, examples of innovation in action, client outcomes or reflections on entrepreneurial challenges and learning.

Leadership Award
of the Year

The Legal Sector Leadership Award recognises outstanding and inspirational leaders in Wales’ legal sector. Judges will assess strategic vision and positive impact on the profession, including contributions to industry change, diversity and inclusion, innovation, and ethical or sustainable practices. This leader may hold a legal or operational role with firm-wide or team-based leadership responsibilities. Anyone from the legal sector in Wales may enter.

The judges will be looking for: * Vision & Leadership: A clear demonstration of strategic thinking, innovation, and the ability to inspire and engage others. * Transformation - how your leadership has specifically helped to plan for and / or deliver change and growth for the organisation * Ethical and Sustainable Leadership: Evidence of responsible decision-making, integrity, and any achievements in leading on ESG. * Results and Influence: Measurable achievements, lasting impact, and any testimonials from colleagues, clients, or industry peers. Supporting evidence may include case studies, testimonials, performance metrics, or examples of leadership in action.

Legal Hero Wales

This is prestigious award honours an individual in Wales’ legal sector who has made an exceptional impact through dedication, courage, or service. It recognises one individual who goes above and beyond to support justice, champion important causes, or make a meaningful difference in their community or profession.

Open to: any individual working in the Welsh legal sector, including solicitors, barristers, legal executives, paralegals, legal support staff, and in-house counsel. The nominee must have made a significant contribution through their work, advocacy, or voluntary efforts.​

Please note: this is a judges' choice award based on written nominations. There are no in-person interviews for this category.
